Breaking it Down

There are many more design styles than I’ve shown. It can be confusing as to where to start. Most styles can be grouped with at least a few others, and then its a matter of the finer details that determine your style.

For example: you could put modern, industrial & mid-century modern in a group, Then using the variations in those styles to determine your preferences. I would also put Rustic, South-western & maybe global/ethnic together. Then I would group Hollywood/Regency with Traditional & Transitional.

There are trickier ones like Cottage, that has elements of traditional & vintage. Or Coastal, which can be quite modern in some aspects, but doesn’t quite fit the bill. Eclectic is well…eclectic, & tropical doesn’t fit in a group either. But these individual styles are either you or not.

I am in my heart a South-western girl, but in building this house 3 years ago we decided to go with a more modern design for resale purposes. I know that an adobe home in QLD would have limited buyers. So, we went modern, but I always like to put my individual twist on things…my own character.

What Design Styles Are There?

Raw & simplistic, rustic style highlights natural beauty & a colonial past.

Hollywood Regency style is theatrical and elegant and it delivers glamour and glitz.

Traditional takes its inspiration from the past. In an elegant but comfortable way.

Tropical is exotic and natural, designed with a resort feel.

Global style takes its inspiration from all exotic points on the map, honouring customs & cultures from across the globe.

Mid-Century Modern is inspired by the period that spans the mid-1940s to 1970. pushing us from the post war era into the modern times.

Transitional is sophistication resting between traditional and contemporary styling. It blends the comfort and warmth of traditional design with the clean profiles and understated colours of the contemporary look.

Vintage – Why go out and buy brand new things, when you can enjoy something in your home that’s been pre-loved, full of character, and are part of an era where things were made to last?” -Paula Mills

South-Western style brings the beauty of the desert and the Old West in to your home. It is rugged and earthy with unmistakable warmth.

With its raw, utilitarian appeal, industrial style gives modern homes a sophisticated edge

Cottage style can be almost a bygone era, with its recycled furnishings and pieces. Always comfortable. Always bright and airy.

With Eclectic you can mix and match old and new, east and west, luxury and simplicity. Make your home an exhibition to the pieces you love.

Crisp whites and marine blues, nautical accents and tailored furnishings combine for classic coastal appeal

My sitting room

I assume, that like me, the majority of people cant afford an interior designer to revamp their home, or what if you’re building a new home and want it to be not only beautifully decorated but to say something about who you are.

Well, I’ve never been to design school…even though I would like to, but over the years I’ve worked out some basic principles in figuring out a persons design style. Then how to implement ideas on a budget.

My sitting room, pictured, is a budget room, although I think it looks high end stylish. I will proceed to show how to discover your own decorating style.
